Exceptional dining and a sumptuous spa at a five-star Scottish Highlands castle hotel with a 3 AA Rosette restaurant – includes breakfast and one afternoon tea
  • Castle cool: Fonab Castle has it all: a lengthy history – built in 1892 as the family home of owners of a port and sherry empire; fabulous character – with splashy wallpapers in the rooms and beautifully appointed intimate restaurants; great views of the forested loch; exceptional dining; and a stunning spa. The latter has an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and a small gym, plus a gym, and massages come particularly highly recommended.

  • Three Rosettes: Gourmands will relish the opportunity to sample the hotel’s delectable Rosette dining, particularly 3 AA Rosette Sandemans – it’s mouth-watering seven-course tasting menu is a standout. Brasserie-style 1892 on the Loch is equally fabulous, offering top-notch dishes with views of Loch Faskally. There’s also a fabulously indulgent afternoon tea menu, which you can upgrade with Champagne or gin for further extravagance.

  • Explore the Highlands: The setting is wonderful, and in just a few kilometres you can be exploring the beautiful surroundings of the Cairngorms. The Scottish National Trail passes close by to the hotel (should you wish to discover part of the 864-kilometre route) and the nearby Allean Forest offers dreamy vistas and well-marked trails. Speak to the hotel about high-octane adventures like quad biking and highland safaris.

Fonab Castle Hotel, Foss Rd, Pitlochry PH16 5ND

This splendid setting is perfectly situated for exploring picturesque Perthshire, on the southern bank of the river Tummel. Activities in this secluded pocket of the Scottish Highlands include clay shooting, wild salmon fishing, striding across heather-strewn moors, spotting kingfishers, otters and herons, or zooming around rugged terrain in a 4x4. The southern reaches of the Cairngorms National Park are about 10 minutes to the north.

More sedate activities include whiskey tasting at local distilleries, exploring pretty Pitlochry or shopping for Scottish tartan and tweed at House of Bruar, one of the finest outfitters in the country.
