Sumptuous beds promise a good night’s sleep, while a number of rooms have far-reaching views over the moors and the Esk Valley.

  • You won’t find fresher: The hotel’s award-winning restaurant is gathers ingredients from the local area, including freshly landed Whitby fish and delicious cheeses. The style is fine dining with a Yorkshire twist: local beef short rib braised in beer, North Sea pan-fried cod and saddle of venison are standout dishes – though you’ll want to save space for the marmalade and whiskey treacle tart. There’s a bar and a coffee shop, too, for lighter bites.

  • Geared up for adventure: Active types will relish the fresh air and freedom on offer, right on the doorstep. There’s amazing hiking in all directions over the North York Moors, and cyclists are very well supported with racks, tools and repair kits, parts and spares and of course, a good slice of cake for when you’ve swung off the saddle. The staff are great at suggesting routes and helping with sustenance.

How to get there

The hotel is within the North York Moors National Park, about 50 minutes’ drive north of York. There’s a station about five miles away at Grosmont, which has connections from Middlesborough, but we’d recommend a car to make the most of the remote setting.

The Mallyan Spout Hotel, Goathland, Whitby YO22 5AN

The top local attraction is certainly Mallyan Spout Waterfall, a thundering plume streaming out of mossy cliffs just a few hundred metres from the hotel. It’s the highest single fall in the North York Moors. Bring your hiking boots (and maybe a backpack too) and you make a day of it: there’s a great circular walk of about three and a half miles that takes in Mallyan Spout as well as Goatland and Thomason Foss – three waterfalls for the price of one, plus there’s a charming pub en route where you can stop for a pint and a breather.

If your interests lean more towards the cultural, the charming village of Goathland is worth an explore. It might feel a little familiar, for the creators of Heartbeat based their fictional village of Aidensfield on the area, and the station was used as Hogsmeade in the filming of the Harry Potter series of movies. Pick the right time and you can time your stay with a trip on the fabulous steam train that often stops here. The village is surrounded in all directions by the moors, grazed by black-faced sheep; peace and serenity is virtually guaranteed.

The coast is a mere 20-minute drive. Head out to Robin’s Hood Bay to eat fish and chips with a view; the ancient fishing village forms part of the Heritage Coast and has a family-friendly sandy beach, twisting cobbled streets and a vibrant assortment of shops and restaurants.
