8 Rue Rabelais, 37400 Amboise, France

Elegant, genteel Amboise straddles both sides of the Loire River, a small market town with lofty beginnings, for it was once the home of the French royal court. It’s the perfect jumping off point for exploring the Loire Valley, one of France’s loveliest regions, where grand chateaux languish within magnificent gardens, vineyards offer effervescent crémants and flinty Chenin blancs, and richly fertile farms proffer a veritable cornucopia of fruits and vegetables.

For chateaux spotting, head to Indre-et-Loire, or stay closer to home and explore the jaw-dropping Royal Chateau of Amboise, which is built over the river with landscaped gardens as far as the eye can see. The day-to-day of the Pays de la Loire is distinctly rural, but head to one of the sophisticated larger towns - perhaps Orleans, Tours or Angers - to see a different side of this varied French region.
