Hanging mysteriously in the shape of a bird in flight off the German-Danish border, Sylt is the alluring playground of the North Frisian Islands. Since the 1960s, it's been a glamour-soaked speck in the North Sea, with glitterati swanning down its sandy shores past stripey lighthouses and well-preserved thatched cottages. Your shorefront hotel faces the eight-kilometre sandy stretch that is Westerland Beach, whose scenic promenade is lined with cafés, shops, seafood eateries and more.
