  • Your Scottish escape: Pleasantly set at the gateway to Central Scotland, the Macdonald Inchyra Hotel & Spa is perfectly placed if you want to explore Falkirk, or simply flop onto a treatment bed and be whisked away into a world of pampering in the spa. Rooms are spacious and traditional, with touches of tartan (we’re in Scotland, after all) and Elemis toiletries for a touch of luxury.

  • Spa stay: Emerge from your time at the Inchyra feeling like a new person, thanks to the vast array of treatments on offer in the spa (fees apply). With everything from hot stone massages and pedicures to body nectar wraps, there’s a way to feel tip top from head to toe. Plus, once you’ve indulged in your choice of treatment, head to the thermal suite and restful indoor pool to prolong the feeling of bliss.

  • Treat yourself: You’ve pampered the outside, so why not treat the inside, too? Dine on deliciously fresh and seasonal dishes at the Scottish Steakhouse – as well as mouth-watering ribeye and sirloin steaks there are classic burgers, fish pies and plenty of options to suit all tastes. For a special occasion, indulge with a Sunday roast or book an afternoon tea to enjoy refined finger sandwiches, scones and cakes.

Macdonald Inchyra Hotel & Spa, Grange Rd, Polmont, Falkirk FK2 0YB

Falkirk’s a lesser-visited corner of Scotland, but it’s a hidden gem if you want to see a lot in a short space of time. Capital city Edinburgh is just a 45-minute drive away, where you’ll find hilly cobbled streets, elegant Georgian buildings, beautiful gardens and of course, the looming castle. Glasgow too is 35 minutes’ drive, famous for its Victorian and Art Nouveau architecture, cultural attractions like the opera, theatre and ballet, and its thriving music scene.

If you’re keen to stay local, Falkirk has its own attractions: The Kelpies, a magnificent pair of steel horse heads standing 30 metres high, can be seen at the Helix, where there’s a visitor centre. You can take tours inside the sculptures, enjoy a family day out at the Adventure Zone, or cycle along the variety of pathways. Boat lovers will relish a trip to the Falkirk Wheel, an innovative rotating boat lift connecting the Forth and Clyde and the Union canals. Otherwise, there’s plenty to keep you occupied in the hotel’s spa, should you prefer a more sedate way to relax.
