Adrift in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar, the island of Mauritius is something of a paradise. It enjoys tropical weather, rich wildlife and incomparable beaches. You're right by the Baie aux Tortues - so named for the huge number of tortoises that were once seen here by 17th-century sailors - and just over 20 minutes' walk from the ruins of the Portuguese fort of Balaclava. Ask at Maritim Resort & Spa's front desk whether you can pop into their grounds to see these impressive 18th-century ruins and cannons from the time when the French had conquered the island and named nearby Port Louis in honour of King Louis XV.

Drive a half-hour south to this very same melting pot of a city, to experience the riot of colour, world influences and sensations in its famed Central Market and get a good overview of the island's complex history at Blue Penny Museum. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens is a must for everyone, with its showstopping blooms and tropical foliage rivalling those of Kew Gardens.
