Treloyhan Manor, Trelyon Ave, Carbis Bay, Saint Ives TR26 2RX

Imagine an impossibly beautiful sandy beach gazing across sparkling waters and a huge sweep of coastline: this is Carbis Bay, proud holder of a raft of accolades, including Blue Flag status and a member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. The lighthouse which inspired Virginia Woolf's novel can be spied across the bay, while nearby St Ives is home to myriad other artists, past and present - all have been drawn by the magical light and even more magical scenery. Spend happy days on the golden sand beach and maybe splash out on a Sunseeker yacht for trips around the coast.

Day trips include spotting seals at aptly named seal island, enjoying the modern art at Tate St Ives, a round of golf with a view of the sands at West Cornwall Golf Club, or a visit to Feadon Farm Wildlife Centre, where you can meet reindeer, badgers and rescue foxes. You could also take long walks along the South West Coast Path or hire a bike to explore the many bike trails.
